Oz Traveler 2004
Updated June 29, 2004
Well, I have been back on track then off track again.  I did not leave Kalgoorlie on Friday nor did I leave on Saturday.  I finally got under
way on Sunday May 23rd.  The spring was ready by 2:30 and I took the vehicle in for the tires on Thursday.  Then I found a seamstress to
hem my curtains but they would not be ready until Friday about 3:30.  On Friday I installed a new radio (the tape deck of the original would
jam the tape when I tried to eject it.  I got the curtain rails ready and a bunch of little things that needed done.  As I was finding the loose
wire for the front driving light I noticed the primary battery hold down was broken.  This reminded me to check the 2nd battery and I found
the mount broken as this was a home made unit I decided to buy one for a 4X4.  It was going on 3:30 so I hoped in and went to Outback
4X4 and bought a proper one.  Then I went to Toyota to get the Primary hold down.  It was good I was in gold country because it cost
enough to be made of gold.  Then I went to the seamstress and got the curtains.  Did what I could till dark.  On Saturday I checked out and
went out of town to a rest stop to install the battery box and hold down.  Took about 2 hours.  I decided to find which belt was squealing.  It
was the double alternator belts.  Took over  3 hours.  By now it was going on 3:30 and my hands were cold.  There was a wind blowing all
day.  I decide to stay another night.  I left on Sunday and headed for Laverton.  Had to wait 45 minutes for fuel.  A mining vehicle was taking
on 2500 liters and it took a long time. I finally did get to the Serpentine Lakes on the Anne Beadell Hwy.  As I was returning I started hearing
a snapping sound and discovered the roof rack had broken 3 of the 6 stand offs.  I wired them back together and continued on to camp.
Next morning I made Neale Junction at about 9 and turned north on the Connie Sue.  The roof rack was holding.  A day later I reached
Warburton where I hoped to get it welded up.  Warburton is suppose to have a repair capabilities but the Community work shop was the
only repair shop.  I took it to them and they had me return in the morning and by noon I was reinstalling the rack.  I was going to just wait
around but Gary King a Contractor who was teaching how the building should have been constructed for the climate they are in, invited me
to his house for coffee and to check the weather on the Internet for the  Gunbarrel.  He eventually helped me put the rack back on.  The
next day I left for the Gunbarrel.  I eventually made Carnegie Station and two days later I was at Wiluna.  I stayed at the Gunbarrel Grapes
Vineyard.  They rent out the worker quarters in the off season.  They niche is to sell table grapes to the Perth markets during December.
This is in between the larger producers of table grapes from the south.  I started on the Canning Stock route on Tuesday June 1st.  I
eventually reached Well 33 and the Kunawarritji Community.  I was on my last 20 liters of fuel.  I spent most of the day at the community
camping area reading.  The following day I started west planning to go on the Telfer Mine road but I had heard that it had rained so I
decided to do the Wapet or Kidson track.  It came out 240 kilometers north of Port Headland.  On the way I to bush bash around a washout
and picked up a stick in my front right tire.  I had it fixed in Port Headland and had 24 rolls of film developed.  I have spend 2 nights here
trying to get the web site updated.  Tomorrow I head for Marble Bar and then the Talawana Track and into Rudall River NP.
